Some events can change our lives forever…

We should always find a good outcome out of the worse situations, even when they seem impossible.

Lately, I have been thinking about how some events impact our lives so drastically.

Let me share a story of a friend of mine! He was born in Brazil and when he was 18 years old he started studying international relations. He graduated and started working with it. He was happy at his job and, every time we talked, he never mentioned any plan to drastically change his career. When he was 26 years old, he had to go through knee surgery, and unfortunately, he caught a hospital-acquired infection. His family immediately transferred him to another hospital, where he was able to recover. One day I went to visit him at the hospital, he was already feeling a lot better and, even though he was having a good response to the treatment, he was terrified!

After he left the hospital and was recovered from the infection, he decided he was going to change his career and… start medicine! YES, MEDICINE! Everyone thought he was crazy! Even though he wasn’t old (he was only 26), people thought he was too old to start studying medicine!

Even with all the criticism, he was convinced and confident with the new path that he had chosen! He dedicated 100% of his time to study and got into the University after 1 year of hard work (in Brazil, people usually take 3–4 years to be accepted in Medicine).

Fast forward to 2019, when he was deciding on his specialization. His choice: infectology! In 2020 he got accepted at one of the best hospitals in Brazil for infectology and now he is on the front-line fighting COVID-19. Recently he was honored by the hospital and now all his friends and family are very proud of him (and I believe he is very proud of himself as well). No one thinks he is crazy anymore and now he is the go-to person whenever we have questions related to our health!

His story is great for many reasons, but I would like to highlight one: he only decided to change his career because he got a hospital-acquired infection and got terrified. Who would have imagined that a knee surgery could change his life so drastically? He entered the hospital as a patient and left the hospital with the call to be a doctor!

Many times, we don’t know why things happen in our lives. We usually question ourselves if we did something wrong or if we could have done something to prevent the situation. At that moment we can’t imagine how that situation will be important to change our future. We get sad, angry, terrified, nervous,…we get everything but happy! However, I want to invite everyone to, even though it is super important to feel all of our emotions, to try to take action to leave these situations we don’t want to be in.

I know it is not easy to act when you are at these moments, but these are the moments that will change your life forever. Think about all the bad things that happen to your life and how it has changed your course of action and your life. I know it is easier to analyze looking back in time, but believe me when I say that better days will come!

I don’t believe that these are the only moments that change us. I have amazing memories of great days in my life that also changed who I am, my course of action, and my life! These days we want to relive over and over again, the bad days we want to be forgotten!

I decided to share this just to remind everyone that, if you are having a bad day, trust me when I say there are always good and brighter days coming in the future.
